On the 14^th of June in Gothenburg, Sweden a successful Cyclelogistics Empowerment Workshop for Cities took place. Jointly co-organized by the European Cyclists’ Federation, the city of Gothenburg, the Urban Freight Logistics Thematic Group of CIVITAS and the Cyclelogistics Ahead project, the workshop offered the opportunity for cities to learn more about cyclelogistics in cities across Europe, and also provided ground to exchange ideas and share knowledge.

The rich program of the workshop included a morning session with a presentation by Gary Armstrong, expert on Cyclelogistics, on the potential and possible measures to be taken by governments. The interactive part focused on the stories from cities which work to kick-start cycle logistics projects, and the afternoon session allowed participants to explore Gothenburg and see examples of successfully realized cycle logistics projects first-hand.

The workshop was attended by participants from all over Europe, which was well reflected in the four case studies examined during the workshop: Karlstad in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark, Milan in Italy and Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Cyclelogistics are considered in many cities in order to help solve a number of problems, including (but not limited to) air pollution, traffic congestions and road congestions. In Milan, for example, deliveries by bicycle are well under way – with a number of small delivery companies being up and running, thus contributing to a better air quality, as well as helping to reduce obstructions on the road. On the other hand, the examples from Karlstad and Copenhagen showed that it might be difficult for small start-up cycle delivery companies to enter the market of big players. The change necessary for this sector improvement can be brought by a better understanding of how bigger logistics chains and businesses work, and with an attempt to open up the market for cycle based delivery companies.

A strong political will could be another potential game changer, especially in cities with few cyclelogistics experience as Dubrovnik. Raising awareness and engaging stakeholders are steps forward in the right direction. Despite the narrow sized streets of such cities, there is much potential for small parcel deliveries. As noted by participants from Sweden, cyclelogistics work best in dense urban areas where it has an obvious added economic value.

In conclusion, the support from municipalities and businesses companies, together with adequate cycling infrastructur is vital for cyclelogistics to become more visible and successful in our cities. Cyclelogistics is the answer for cleaner and vibrant cities!
