Meet the host city

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and sustainability capital of SE Europe, a quickly developing city with a clear vision to create multi-purpose, shared spaces and pursuing the goal of putting the quality of life at the forefront. In Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, cycling is seen as a priority.  Numerous improvements have been implemented in cooperation with various stakeholders in the past decade. With 75% of all surfaces being green spaces, Ljubljana is a beautiful place.  In Ljubljana, cyclists and pedestrians share a 100 000 m2 space in the city centre, where motorised traffic was abolished already in 2007. Ljubljana was ranked among the top 20 bicycle-friendly cities in the world in three consecutive periods by the Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index.

About the organisers

Velo-city 2022 Ljubljana was jointly organised by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), Gospodarsko razstavišče d.o.o (GR), Dekon (PCO) and the City of Ljubljana.

“I am pleased that Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, which is committed to sustainable development, is hosting such an important bicycle conference. We are proud that international experts have recognized our progress in the field of cycling, and that the European Cyclists’ Federation has entrusted us with the organization of this meeting, where we will highlight the latest activities, guidelines and measures in the field of bicycling in the cities” - Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković.

"The general benefits of urban cycling are well known, the most important being the one that drives changes in the social and political environment towards a responsible community of the future. Therefore bicycle is not only a means of active mobility, but also a tool of active citizenship. On bicycles we turn the wheels of progress." - Deputy Mayor of Ljubljana & "an activist of sharing: space, vehicles and buildings.

"In Slovenia, as elsewhere in Europe, we see a strong increase in trips by bicycle and bicycle sales reach record highs. Policy makers scramble to accommodate their citizens who wish to see a sustainable transport system. The time is now. Citizens and decision makers are ready to change the way we move and live. Velo-city 2022 Ljubljana will offer a high-level opportunity for policy-makers, academia, industry and consumers, to acknowledge the key role the bicycle plays in building a more liveable world. I personally look forward to seeing you in Ljubljana in 2022." - Henk Swarttouw, ECF President.
