How can cycling lead the transition towards the recovery of our society?

Cycling is undoubtably a simple and accessible way for everyone to initiate positive societal change and make a difference. According to a recent study in Nature, approximately 414 million metric tons of carbon emission could be reduced if everyone in the world cycles 1.6 km every day, while another study has shown that current cycling levels already save up to €4 billion in fuel costs annually within the EU.

Therefore, incrementing and improving cycling infrastructure is one of the keys to success to promote active and sustainable mobility and to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030.

Leipzig leads the way

Amidst a backdrop of continuous crises, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the energy crisis to climate change, the city of Leipzig is using cycling to lead the transition towards a sustainable and better future.

Leipzig already represents proof of how cycling can make a difference and change a city, as well as people’s lives, for the better. Over the past 30 years, the city has undergone major changes, transforming from a city with open-cast coal mines and disastrous infrastructure and roads to a greener urban environment with a focus on sustainable mobility and state-of-the-art transport solutions.

Most impressively, the disastrous infrastructure of old has been transformed into a safe network of cycle lanes, which made it possible for more than 4,500 cyclists to take part in the Leipziger Radnacht (cycling night), the official annual start of the Stadtradeln (city cycling competition) in September 2022.

Don’t miss out on your chance to partake in the world’s largest cycling summit in one of Europe’s newest and most progressive cycling cities. Submit your abstract before 3 November here.
