The Velo-city conference, where the world’s leading cycling researchers, advocates and urban planners convene alongside government officials in the name of more cycling for all, calls for 2025 potential host cities to prepare their bids.

Velo-city offers a unique opportunity for host cities to present themselves to the global cycling community as a liveable and active city. The conference also boosts the local economy by attracting a large number of international visitors, promoting active lifestyles, encouraging sustainable urban development and enhancing a city’s international image.

Last year’s edition, Velo-city 2021 Lisboa turned out to be nothing less than a truly momentous and inspirational event which underlined the enormous opportunities that exist for cycling today.

Held in a hybrid format, the four-day conference brought together over 1,300 cycling advocates, policymakers, city officials, industry leaders, researchers and journalists around the theme of “Cycle Diversity” to meet, debate and shape the future of cycling across the world.

Acting as a global knowledge exchange and policy transfer platform, each year Velo-city attracts a growing number of over 1400 delegates from more than 60 different countries. Additionally, the conference exhibition showcases the latest innovations for a better cycling experience in cities and beyond.

The Board of the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) is, therefore, pleased to launch the bidding procedure for the 2025 Velo-city conference edition.

Take the opportunity to show the worldwide cycling community that your city is fully embracing sustainable and active mobility by hosting the world cycling summit. Whilst helping to accelerate sustainable urban development and boost the local economy.

We now invite cities from all over the world to bid for Velo-city 2025.

The benefits of hosting Velo-city 2025

The conference offers a unique opportunity for the host city to present itself to the global cycling community as a liveable and active city. Velo-city also boosts the local economy by attracting a large number of international visitors, promoting an active lifestyle, stimulating sustainable urban development and enhancing the city’s international prestige.

Direct economic benefits for the hosting city

Velo-city promotes the host city. An event of this size and importance positively impacts the economy of the city, and country, through spillover effects into the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Boosting the development of a sustainable, bicycle-friendly, liveable city

Hosting a Velo-city conference should be integrated into a strategy to make the city more bicycle-friendly, greener and liveable. All cities that have hosted the conference have benefited from Velo-city by:

  • raising the international profile and prestige of their city
  • creating fruitful relationships with cycling user groups
  • generating substantial publicity for their city and its policies
  • receiving feedback on their transport and environmental plans
  • hearing about other successful active mobility policies
  • involving the elected representatives in the debate on transport issues
  • engaging with the public on mobility strategies
