Day three of Velo-city 2019 will begin with a stimulating discussion: ‘Infrastructure from the City to Greenways’!

Infrastructure is one of the backbones of cycling development. Cycling infrastructure has generated wide-ranging debates covering topics such as resilient infrastructure, shared space, segregation, cycling streets, quiet ways and much more.

To share or to segregate? Is shared space a friend or foe? How do you decide and how do you enforce? The discussion between vehicular cycling (cyclists riding in regular traffic, as cars and buses do) versus segregated infrastructure (cycling infrastructure which has varying degrees of separation from motorized traffic) has been the main focus, especially in the urban environment.

Tackling climate change and protecting the environment, whilst maintaining and developing new sustainable transport systems pose new and existing challenges. How do we balance the sometimes competing demands of protecting ecological habitats, whilst also providing much needed new cycling infrastructure near protected areas? Infrastructure is crucial when longer journeys go through green areas and unused infrastructure can be refurbished to make leisure cycling and commuting possible through nature. This is where greenways come up which are trails (and sometimes wildlife corridors) found in both urban and rural settings that are frequently created out of a disused railway, canal towpath, or derelict industrial land.

These are some of the issues that we will endeavour to tease out and to explore what has worked elsewhere and how.

Come listen to our plenary speakers in this session:

Dr. Jennifer Dill is a Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University. Her research aims to understand people’s everyday travel decisions, with a focus on bicycling, walking, and transit.

Ms. Anne Graham is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority in Ireland. As Chief Executive she has taken a very public stance promoting Transport Planning and, in particular, the benefits of public transport in delivering a better society.

Mr. Xavier Brice is the Chief Executive Officer of Sustrans. He has a wealth of experience in public transport and is committed to sustainable transport, being a lifelong cyclist and public-transport aficionado.

Mr. Burkhard Stork is the Executive Director of the German Cyclists’ Association ADFC. The ADFC promotes bicycle use in all societal areas such as individual transport, logistics and tourism. He is one of the leading advocates for urban cycling – promoting safe and attractive bike infrastructure for all at the national and international level.

We look forward to seeing you at Velo-city 2019!
