We continue our mini-interview series with the Velo-city 2019 Keynote Speakers! #VC19Keynote #MeetTheSpeakers #CyclingForTheAges

Dr. Jennifer Dill is a professor in the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University and Director of the Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC).

Her research focuses on the relationships between transportation, land use, health, and the environment, with a focus on bicycling and walking, as well as newer modes such as e-scooters and carsharing. Her cycling research has included evaluations of innovative infrastructure in the US, equity of bikesharing, types of cyclists, and rider behavior using GPS data. Dr. Dill chaired the Transportation Research Board’s Bicycle Transportation Committee, as well as serving on several TRB bicycling-related research panels.

What does “cycling for the ages” (the conference theme) mean to you?

That we design our cities so that everyone feels safe and comfortable riding at all stages of life.

What is something unique/interesting about Portland’s approach to cycle infrastructure (or cycling in general)?

Portland tries new, innovative infrastructure (for the U.S.) and makes a serious effort to evaluate the impacts, thus helping get such innovations accepted both locally and nationally. We also have fun, from the largest naked bike ride in the country to a unicycling Darth Vader playing bagpipes, you never know what you'll see riding by.

What do you expect from Velo-city 2019 Dublin?

To hear the latest in new ways to improve cycling in cities, particularly in this age of "new mobility."

Dr Jennifer Dill is a speaker in the fourth plenary session of Velo-city 2019 Dublin, entitled “Infrastructure - from the City to the Greenways” to take place on Thursday June 27th 2019 at 9.00-10.00.
