SafeLMD's goal is to make last mile delivery safer and greener. We develop teaching and learning materials that are tailored to the needs of bicycle couriers and integrate them into existing formal and non-formal educational offerings.
The fast-paced expansion of e-commerce, accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, has posted unprecedented pressures on Last Mile Deliveries (LMDs), revealing inefficiencies within the urban logistics chain related to the courier and postal (CEP) sectors’ environmental and social sustainability.
In response, several operators from the CEP are switching to conventional and electric bike-based transport for short-distance deliveries, contributing to the “greening” of urban logistics. This transformation is also propelled up by the EU Green Deal, national strategies towards zero-carbon cities and customers’ sustainability expectations.
However, the higher number of LMD working cyclists (predominantly low-skilled workers often without driving licenses or previous experience) on roads has led to an increased number of bike-related accidents and fatalities. In this context, the strengthening of both formal and nonformal vocational education training (VET) is therefore essential so that LMD working cyclists can acquire the skills needed for sustainable deliveries and safe, accident-free routes, which are vital for the full exploitation of bikes’ potential in the last mile of urban deliveri
Vocational curriculum with Open Educational Resources (OER’s)
SafeLMD project invites you to test a novel, non-formal, vocational training program in safe and sustainable last mile delivery operations in an urban context.
We encourage last mile delivery couriers and related logistic operation organisations to test our curriculum, which is accessible in multiple languages and to take advantage of the educational and business opportunities arising from testing and adopting SAFE LMD including:
- A curriculum for bike-based urban last mile delivery logistic operations
- An EU-wide recognised certification delivered by ECQA.
- An enhanced ESCO “Occupational and Skill card.”
