Velo-city has something for everyone. We decided to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for in our rich programme of seven plenary sessions, over 80 parallel sessions and over 250 speakers.

This article features two parallel sessions which focus on Cargo bikes. Cargo bikes have been around since 1877. They used to be a critical part of the merchants’, craftsmen’s and factories’ business model before becoming a trendy way of doing groceries or getting the children to school around 15 years ago. Having a cargo bike is a great option for many people these days, especially among young families. Still, cargo bikes are starting to make a comeback, with cargo bikes being used for postal services in various European countries and trialled for municipal waste and cleaning services within cities such as Hamburg, as you will find out in one of our sessions at Velo-city 2019.

Beyond carrying precious cargo, these bikes have a huge potential to solve many global mobility problems. As a topic, cargo bikes are at the crossroads between two of our main themes at Velo-city 2019: ‘Technology, Intelligent Transport Systems and Data Analytics’ and ‘Environment and Infrastructure’. Our ‘Tackling the Environment & Climate Change’ and ‘Integrating with public transport, intermodality? How to achieve it’ sub-themes are strongly linked to the topic of cargo bikes.

In our ‘Cargobikes - reshaping cities’ session, we’ll bring you up to speed on how to solve congestion issues in cities by prioritising the integration of bike networks into the regional transit system. What is the successful pathway to a modal shift towards more cycling and less congestion?

Cargo bikes have a huge potential to not only revolutionise the transit system, but also change people’s way of working. How to encourage people to use e-cargo bikes for their daily work? Is there a type of person for commercial e-cargo bike operations? Can the work traditionally implemented with pickup trucks be shifted to e-cargo bikes? You’ll get the chance to find out all about how city cleaning activities could be substituted by e-cargo bikes. Last but not least, what is the role a bike courier could fulfill and how can this be practically realised? Speakers in this session will be talking about how to actively support commercial biking in the city. Come along to meet them in person: Colm Ennis from Dublin City Council, Ilse Galama from Goudappel Coffeng, Britta Peters from Stadtreinigung Hamburg, Veerle De Meyer from the City Of Mechelen, and Martin Forsberg from Koucky & Partners.

The second session featuring cargo bikes at Velo-city 2019 is from the H2020 project ‘City Changer Cargo Bike’, which is the perfect opportunity to learn how to scale up the use of cargo bikes, whether you are a mayor, a start-up, or giant of home delivery. What does it take to increase the use of cargo bikes in last mile city logistics (both for delivery companies and family logistics and individuals)? Niccolo' Panozzo from the European Cyclists’ Federation is one of the speakers in this session.
