The European Cyclists’ Federation attended the 15^th edition of the Iberian Congress of ConBici (https://conbici.org/) and FPCUB’s (http://www.fpcub.pt/)  “The Bicycle and the City” in the cycling city of Valencia between May 16 and 20, 2018.

About the Iberian Cycling Congress:

The Iberian Congress “The Bicycle and the City” is a joint initiative of ConBici and the Federação Portuguesa de Cicloturismo e Utilizadores de Bicicleta (FPCUB). It is the oldest series of bicycle congresses in Spain, being its first edition in 1996.

Its goal is to present the most important novelties and experiences around the bicycle as a means of transport in Spain and Portugal. The themes are the designs of bike lanes, school roads, cycle routes, regulations, intermodality, public bikes and new types of urban bikes, among others.

Achieving a liveable city, with less noise, with more green spaces and more social accessibility and with fewer cars, involves including citizens in urban transformation. In this sense, the XVth edition of the Iberian Congress "The Bicycle and the City" wants to become a key element of this collective objective. That is why the “liveability” axes on which the congress has been based are designed to approach the urban complexity that develops daily and in which the bicycle is inserted. Understanding the dynamic relationship between citizenship, urbanism and modes of displacement are believed to be the best way to achieve this, therefore the presentations, papers and workshops of the congress seek to strengthen the citizen, organizational, professional and political networks of the city.

Morten Kabell, the General Director of Copenhagenize, was the keynote speaker of the opening plenary “the Bicycle and the City” in the very impressive Museu Valencià d’Etnologia and shared ideas about successful cycling investments in the city of Copenhagen.

During the next three days of the congress several sessions dedicated to various topics related to cycling, such as cycle logistics, cycle tourism, were organised.

ECF was invited to organise a session dedicated to European funding for cycling in which ECF's 6 billion campaign for cycling and ECF’s European Observatory for Cycling were presented. After a presentation about how and where participants could identify the most relevant European funding instruments, a workshop was organised with the participants to brainstorm about potential ideas for European Cycling projects. During the workshop ECF shared its experiences with regard to European Funding and gave the participants recommendations to improve their project ideas.
