“Cities and Regions for Cyclists” is a global network of cities working to promote bicycle use in urban areas. Today we warmly welcome new cities that have recently joined the network: The City of Prague, the Puglia Region and the City of Bologna.

More and more cities have been implementing progressive civic projects in recent years to promote sustainable and efficient transportation in order to address issues of traffic congestion and air pollution.  The Cities and Regions for Cyclists network now counts more than 30 members, ranging from small towns to some of the largest metropolises in the world. -It's inspiring to see that more and more local authorities recognise cycling as an essential component when adopting new models of urban development and planning sustainable cities. A long list of experiences all over the world is building the case for the benefits of cycling on society: promoting a liveable urban environment, improving social inclusion and emancipation.

The purpose of “Cities and Regions for Cyclists” is to build on these positive developments and establish a global ECF network of cities which are working to promote bicycle use in urban areas and encourage the exchange of knowledge.

Main aims of the network are:
  • Putting cycling at the centre of urban planning and political thinking;
  • Inspiring and catalyzing more cities to take concrete action in promoting cycling by learning from each other and avoiding the dilemma of having to “reinvent the wheel”;
  • Exchanging knowledge, solutions and strategies and thus promoting political initiatives and practical work on the ground;
  • Promoting and supporting a change in policy and planning practices in cities, and introducing a cycle-friendly perspective in these processes.
