Velo-city day 1: Access to life
The session ‘’Access to life’’ tackled the topic of using cycling as a tool for accessing economic and social life.
Ana Beatriz Maciel kicked off the session with an interesting presentation about women and cycling. Her research has demonstrated that the main reason why women cycle in the city of Rio de Janeiro is because it is fast, healthy and cheap.
Another way to achieve a more inclusive society through cycling is by recycling unused or broken bicycles, as Foco Migrante has been doing. Because cycling is not just restricted to personal benefits. It also generates a lot of social and economic benefits.
Felipe Marino from LABMOB stressed in his presentation ‘’the right to access’’ in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Currently this right cannot be realised by the City because of the lack of adequate, active mobility infrastructure.
