The next edition of Velo-city Conference Series taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia between 2nd and 5th of June 2020, will revolve around the creation of smart, inclusive and cycling friendly environments of the future, which is reflected in the conference title 'Smart Cycling Inclusion'.

Experts are invited to share their insights on three separate sub-themes and contribute to a vibrant discussion on the future role and development of cycling globally.

The conference sub-themes of the Velo-city 2020 in Ljubljana are the following:

Social Innovation & Tech

Under this theme we look for abstracts on the state, role and challenges of technology and innovation for human-oriented urban and mobility planning. Some of the discussion could revolve around socially inclusive technological solutions and innovation, the positives and possible negatives of said innovation(should technology serve people or the other way around?), the connectivity of users, modes and infra: big data, MAAS and intermodality.

Speakers could also share their vision of cycling in relation to social responsibility and cycling potential in the Circular & Sharing economy, as well as discuss health promotion and benefits of cycling. Always interesting and thought-provoking is the discussion on the inclusive approach in mobility planning, sharing of urban space and bringing together different expectations, as well as mitigating possible conflicts among different space users. The role of cycle tourism and new innovative cycle tourism products & concepts is another interesting topic that deserves in-depth exploration.

Sharing Public Space & Connecting People

This theme aims at bringing different approaches and discussions on the challenges of creating accessible, safe, clean, shared and functional spaces for people. The city centre of Ljubljana is an example of a successful shared space story and will therefore play a big role in the discussions around public space. The latest developments, planning and design of the city clearly place people in the centre of it.  Moreover, the strategic location of Slovenia also allows us to further the discussion of connecting cities and regions and extend it to cross border connectivity.

Under this theme speakers could bring attention to the importance of safe, innovative and high-quality mobility infrastructure(cycling in particular), discuss the Smart City concept and challenges it brings to the table, talk about the need for inclusive public space (City for All), brainstorm on the public bike sharing systems and relations between users, vehicles and infrastructure and much more!

   Policy of the Future

When we think about cycling and the sharing of space in the future we can’t forget to take into account the policy and regulatory frameworks we have available today and ask ourselves if they are effective and in line with the fast progress of technology? Are they able to keep-up with innovation and disruptions appearing in mobility and public spaces today? What are the main challenges and possible solutions? This theme will aim at exploring policy development, policy areas and policy implementation in relation to mobility, sharing of space and technological innovation.

Following Velo-city's tradition of thought-provoking and engaging content on cycling and mobility, we invite you to share with us an abstract for a presentation which will inspire and provoke attendees, encourage discussion and help us reflect on the future of cycling experience globally. Taking our theme ‘Smart Cycling Inclusion’ as the basis, we are looking for abstracts that will encourage us to envision a future where cycling is at the core of mobility discussions and urban planning.

We want our speakers to think outside the box, so feel free to be innovative with your topic!
