Velo-city 2019 will take place in Dublin - a beautiful historic city known for its culture and hospitality. The city has a unique landscape being a coastal city divided by a river and encircled by canals. The small, compact nature of Dublin city makes it an ideal location for a cycling conference and event. The Velo-city conference will be hosted in the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) located on the River Liffey and positioned at the convergence of several key coastal, river and canal cycle routes. This award winning venue, located in Dublin’s Docklands, is just a ten-minute walk from the historic city centre, the heart of the City, with all the major historic, cultural and social amenities it has to offer.

Dublin is a truly unique city in that it is the only capital city in the world that is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.  Dublin’s existing and planned cycle network follows our coastline, rivers and canals.  It moves through sensitive ecological areas where special habitats, flora and fauna are protected.  Cycle routes are implemented in collaboration with Parks and Wildlife Services and Waterways Ireland and must go through rigorous Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA) assessments.

The Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) cycle route is a promenade and cycleway link surrounding Dublin Bay that will extend approximately 22kms from the coastal suburbs of Sutton to Sandycove in Dublin.  Dublin Bay regularly supports in excess of 30,000 waterbirds from more than 30 species.  Due to the sensitivity of this unique site as a flight path and habitat to these birds, works on the route have to be scheduled with specific consideration given to migration and nesting seasons.  This also impacts the selection of materials used on the route. Care in all areas during construction is needed to ensure there is no interference with the habitat.  A number of ecologists are employed full time at Dublin Bay and Dublin City Council to work closely with the team to ensure this sensitive area is not interfered with.  Delegates will have the opportunity cycle alongside the natural beauty of Dublin Bay and to learn more about Dublin’s unique experiences in this rare ecological environment.

Visible from the city and just a short journey away, the Dublin Mountains offer waymarked trails for delegates who wish to trade their bicycles for hiking boots and view Dublin from new heights.  For those wishing to extend their visit further and truly experience all Ireland has to offer, Dublin is the gateway to the rest of Ireland and within a few hours, delegates could be taking in the breath-taking views of the Wild Atlantic Way or furthering their cycling experience on the Waterford or Great Western Greenways to name but a few!

Dublin offers the best of both worlds, a bustling capital city where you are only a short distance from the sea and the mountains – it truly is a breath of fresh air! This along with the famous Céad Mile Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes) that Dublin and Ireland are famed for will make Velo-city 2019 an unforgettable conference!
