Velo-city 2018: Get to know the Plenary Speakers!

Velo-city 2018 article series featuring mini interviews on plenary speakers continue with Verena Andreatta, plenary speaker for the plenary: Intermodality.

Ms. Andreatta, architect and urban planner, studied at the Faculdades Integradas Bennett (1981) and received her PhD from the Universidad Politécnica da Cataluña (Barcelona, 2007). She is the author of Cidades Quadradas, Paraísos Circulares: os planos urbanísticos do Rio de Janeiro no século XIX (2006); Atlas Andreatta (2008) and Porto Maravilha Rio de Janeiro + 6 casos de sucesso de revitalização portuária (2010). Since 2012 she is working on mapping Rio’s urban plans for Rice University, Houston. Currently is in charge of the Municipal Secretariat of Urban Planning and Mobility of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A quick chat with Verena Andreatta:

o    What does Access to Life mean to you?

It means that we have to improve our way or moving ourselves and thing about the sustainability of our cities.

o    What cycling lessons are you bringing to Rio?

I am bringing our own experience in the challenging process of implementing bike lanes in Rio de Janeiro.

o    What are you looking forward to the most at Velo-city 2018?

I am looking forward to exchange experience with other participants in order to improve cycling conditions at the Rio de Janeiro City.

o    What do you think is the added value of a global interdisciplinary approach to cycling?

I do think that it will enhance our vision on the sustainability in cycling and avoiding the extensive use of cars in day to day life.

o    What will you visit by bike in Rio?

The harbour area (Porto Maravilha).

The “Intermodality” plenary is scheduled for Day 3 of Velo-city 2018; Thursday 14th June 2018 at 09.00-10.00.
