We continue our mini-interview series with the Velo-city 2019 Keynote Speakers! #VC19Keynote #MeetTheSpeakers #CyclingForTheAges

Burkhard Stork is one of the leading advocates for urban cycling - promoting safe and attractive bike infrastructure for all at the national and international level.

What does cycling for the ages mean to you?

Cycling is a wonderful mode of transport – for everybody. Too many people think it’s just for the sporty and strong. And, to be honest, we've organized cycling that way for far too long – we followed the “vehicular cycling” idea. In the US, in Europe, and also in Germany, we actually believed that we could invite people to cycle if we encouraged them to move between cars. What nonsense! Now we have to understand that’s all about the best cycling infra - for all ages and abilities.

How will the city of the future look like taking into consideration the gaps in the developing and developed world?

And how will the city smell and how sound? In all parts of the world we can see alternatives to the car-oriented cities of the 20th century. Bike-sharing everywhere, ropeways in Latin America, BRT and Light Railways in Asia… Urban mobility changes radically in the moment. Great to be part of that discovery expedition!

What do you expect from Velo-city 2019 Dublin?

Cycling in the 21st century has to be Triple AAA-Cycling: For All Ages and Abilities. What does that mean for the Cycling-Infra? How do we win the space back from cars? And – of course – new urban mobility is not only about cycling. How to integrate all different modes in the new system? Happy to discuss that in Dublin – and I hope I will meet a lot of convinced people – but not only! So important to discuss with other positions and opinions!

Burkhard Stork is a speaker in the fourth plenary session of Velo-city 2019 Dublin, entitled “Infrastructure - from the City to the Greenways” to take place on Thursday, June 27th 2019 at 9.00-10.00.
