In numerous European countries Cycle highways are being developed. Each country picks its own path, be it cycling superhighways (UK), fietssnelwegen (BE) , Radschnellwegen (DE) or snelfietsroutes (NL). But they all encounter similar problems, challenges and questions. Once again, the approach to the problems is a path of its own!

During a dedicated session at this year's Velo-city 2019 Dublin, we will evaluate planning processes, policy frameworks, branding, marketing and decision making. For this session we bring together thought leaders from the UK, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, with expertise and practical experience in planning, developing and building cycling highways. By addressing the same question per country, we will draw a comparison and search for similarities and differences. How do these factors affect the successful design & development of Cycle Highways and who does what best?

This session will be moderated by Sjors van Duren [Consultant on sustainable mobility at Royal HaskoningDHV, Amersfoort], and will feature the following speakers:

  • Markus Franke [Team leader mobility, ARGUS Verkehrsplanung, Hamburg]
  • Brian Deegan [Design engineer, Urban Movement, London/Manchester]
  • Vincent Meerschaert [General Manager, Traject, Ghent]
  • Lorenz Siegel , Landscape Architect, Copenhagenize Design Co, Copenhagen]
  • Anita Stienstra [Cycling coordinator, Province of Gelderland]

The session is scheduled for Thursday 27th June 2019 at 15.30-16.30.
