Through Velo-city 2018 article series we will be taking a closer look into sessions coordinated by Velo-city’s sponsoring organizations and learn more about their main theme and participating speakers. The article series on Sponsor Sessions begin with Tembici’s session: How to rethink a bike sharing system: quality, convenience, sustainability and equity.

Tembici is a specialized company, providing urban mobility solutions in Brazil. Tembici´s core is: plan, implent and operation of automated bike sharing systems and bike parking. Present in 17 brazilian cities, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and others. Tembici now operates more than 33 projects and has over 2 million users since it was founded back in 2010.

Tembici consists of a team of people who are passionate about bicycles and who believe in their transformative power. Tembici was born from the desire to shorten distances, to facilitate routes, to connect people and destinations. They believe that being on the street transforms us and transforms our surroundings. They work every day, enabling intelligent ways of traveling so that all people can improve their relationship with the city.

Six years ago, the first bike sharing system was implemented in Brazil. Since then, most systems increased the number of trips per bike over the years. In May 2017, Tembici, through much research, brought another outlook at those projects and predicted that a technology change was indeed needed, to bring a higher standard in terms of quality on service and with higher durability. In addition, Tembici planned a vast densification work, prioritizing intermobility, with stations near subways and bus terminals. All this added to the reformulation cost structures and pricing methodologies to better suit the end-user and also bringing a medium-term financial sustainability for the system.

The session will introduce Tembici’s work to participants, featuring Tomas Martins, CEO of Tembici.

A quick chat with Tomas Martins:

c.     What are you looking forward to the most at Velo-city 2018?

Velo-city is a landmark, not only for the city of Rio de Janeiro, but also for Brazil. Being able to bring together the best practices in the world, all in one place, essentially for the engagement of the public and private sectors, so there is an incentive for people to create a culture of cycling as their daily mean of transportation.

The Tembici session is scheduled for Day 2 of Velo-city 2018; Wednesday 13th June 2018 at 10.30-11.30.
