Rio de Janeiro: a city in love with bicycles
The survey ‘Perfil do Ciclista’ (Cyclist profile) conducted in 2015 was the first Brazilian study about the profile of urban cyclists. 5012 cyclists were interviewed in ten Brazilian cities, including São Paulo, Salvador, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro. All cyclists selected ride a bike as a transport mode at least once per week. An updating of the survey is currently under development and the results will be published in March 2018.
The majority of Brazilian cyclists interviewed was aged between 25 and 34 years old, they completed their high school, received up to 2 minimum salaries and cycled up to 30 minutes every day. The bicycle is the main mode of transport for respondents who are cycling at least five days a week door-to-door, without integrating with any other means of transport.
Rio de Janeiro, a city in love with bicycles
According to the data, it is immediately evident the intensive use of bicycles amongst people interviewed, in fact, around 81.2% of them ride a bike at least 5 times a week.
Of that total, 37.20% cycles from Sunday to Sunday, 27% use the bike 5 times a week and 17% cycles 6 days a week.
The people who use bicycles in Rio are mostly young people between 25-34 years old (27.7%), 21.9% of cyclists are between 35-44 years and 19.4% between 15 and 24 years. With regard to income, 59.8% of people received up to 3 minimum wages, 30.7% got between 1 and 2 M.W. 16.2% from 2 to 3 M.W. and 12.9% up to one salary.
The modal integration is more representative than the national average, 34.5% of people use the bicycle in addition to another mode of transport. Concerning time, 83.6% of respondents use the bicycle for travels exceeding 30 minutes. Moreover, 56.6% of those surveyed cycle more than 10 and less than 30 minutes and 27% a maximum of 10 minutes during normal displacements.
