In partnership with the ECF’s Scientists for Cycling network, Radboud University successfully organised this year’s edition of the network’s Scientific Colloquium at the margins of the Velo-city conference in Nijmegen. A record-breaking number of around 160 delegates from all over the globe joined the vibrant and engaging discussion on various aspects of cycling research. A dense program of 80 contributions distributed in diverse format of presentations - 3 keynotes, 45 oral presentations, 4 panels and 27 lightning presentation with posters – ran in parallel sessions throughout the day.

ECF President and Chair of the Scientists for Cycling Advisory Board Manfred Neun addressing researchersThe interdisciplinary colloquium touched upon all relevant fields of cycling research, including amongst others urban planning, health, road safety, economics and behavioural sciences. Researchers also formulated key messages for the future of cycling research:

  • There is more research needed on the policy processes leading to decisions concerning cycling.
  • The modelling of the benefits of cycling should be expanded to more comprehensive models comprising the benefits and disbenefits of all modes of transport.
  • Besides the interdisciplinary work, academics should also strive to bring forward research within their respective fields and translate their results in simple and persuasive messages for policy makers.
  • Cycling research should follow an approach that puts people in the centre wherever possible.

At the end of the day, the evening reception was full with enthusiastic and inspired scientists talking, laughing and debating in a cloudy-sunny Monday in Nijmegen.

ECF and its global network Scientists for Cycling would like to express their gratitude to Radboud University and especially to Kevin J. Krizek, visiting professor from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Fariya Sharmeen, lecturer at Radboud, for the successful organisation of this year's colloquium.
