Throughout the Belgian region of Flanders, safe and signposted cycle routes are helping people to access vaccination centres. With Flanders having the highest vaccination rates in Belgium, such accessibility is surely proving a success!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the bicycle emerged as the safest means of transport for making essential trips, to deliver food and medicines, and to get some much-needed outdoor exercise. Now, cycling is also playing a role in Belgium’s on-going vaccination campaign. Healthy, corona proof and fun – what better way to get to the vaccination centre than by bike?

This way!

Everywhere across the region of Flanders there are signs denoting safe, direct and comfortable cycling routes to the nearest vaccination centres. The signs are not standardised, with each vaccination centre having their own set of markings. As shown below, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) has prepared a small gallery to showcase these fantastic cycling initiatives.

Other incentives

Municipalities and institutions in the region are also offering other incentives to choose cycling for the vaccination trips. For example, the municipality of Essen in the province of Antwerp is providing electric-assisted bicycles to travel from the town to the vaccination centre in Brasschaat. One of the first users of the service was 72-year-old Herman Konings, who cycled the 19km distance in only 45 minutes! In Antwerp itself, anyone with an appointment in the Spoor Oost vaccination centre can make use of a free day pass for the Velo Antwerpen public bike.

Is it working?

As of 1 August, 90% of adult Flemings have received their first injection, while 77% have been fully vaccinated. The vaccination levels in Flanders are the highest amongst the Belgian regions and nearly 20% above the EU average. Of course, there have been also many other factors at play, but it certainly has not hurt to provide a healthy, safe and fun way to make the vaccination trip!
