About Earth Hour

According to organisers, Earth Hour is the single, largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world. It inspires a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment.

Earth Hour will take place at 20:30 on March 23, 2013.

The European Commissioner for the Environment has promised to sing a song on stage, if 1,000 people stop driving for a week.

European Commissioners aren't known for being ‘out of the box’. Here’s a fresh wind of change; Janez Potočnik, the European Commissioner for the Environmenthas made a pledge as part of the Earth Hour initiative. If 1,000 people stopped using their cars for at least one week, he’s promised to compose and sing a song in front of the same number of people.

“If enough of us take those small steps, it makes a giant leap forward. A very important first step is to think of the impact our daily choices have on the environment and on our daily quality of life,” says Potočnik, in a Youtube video for Earthhour.

"I will if you will," assures Potočnik.

If you’d like to see the EU commissioner sing on stage, then here’s your  chance. If we get 1,000 people out of cars and onto bicycles, he won't be able to back down.
