On June 3rd 2019, cyclists from all over the world came together to spread the joy of cycling on the second edition of the United Nations’ World Bicycle Day. The day aims to promote cycling as a simple, affordable, reliable and environmentally-friendly transportation solution. ECF celebrated the day alongside the World Cycling Alliance and Bike for Brussels.

At the crossing between Rue Belliard and Avenue des Arts, ECF happily awaited cyclists to raise awareness and present them with a Bike for Brussels bag, an apple as well as little presents from the specially prepared World Cycling Alliance toolkit, which focuses on the simple joy of riding a bike. The event was accompanied with music by a cargo bike DJ. This created a very enjoyable, party-like atmosphere and inspired many cyclists to stop in their tracks. The normally car-congested  corner was revived and came alive with funky Electrowing music and cheerful cyclists.

World Bicycle Day was also a huge online success with the hashtag, #WorldBicycleDay, trending on Twitter and a high number of people participating in the ECF online photo contest. The theme of the contest was 'How the World Looks from the Seat of your Bike’, asking people to share their personal and most enjoyable cycling moments. Support came from all over the world and pictures were shared across borders.

Overall, online and offline, World Bicycle Day was a huge success and a shared passion for cycling connected people from all over the world!
