The main theme of this year’s Velo-City is Access to life. The narrative tells us that to “Learn to Live in order to achieve Happiness and Quality of Life, we need to Integrate Life and Transport generating a Lively Economy. The city of the future is a city with Access to Life”.

Focusing on the subtheme of Integrating Life and Transport, the main objective is to integrate people through transportation and through different modes of transportation. Intermodality, Technology, Tools for Integration, Access to Transport, First and Last Mile Connectivity, E-Bikes, Bike Sharing Systems are just some of the subjects to be addressed.

Diving deeper into the subtheme, Technology and Data constitute different threads of this subtheme and will be explored and thoroughly developed throughout the conference’s planned sessions.

In the last few years, Technology and Data are increasingly powering innovation in the cycling industry, through an emerging need for mobility-related data collection and smart connectivity in transport. The innovations are continuously enhancing the excitement and appeal of cycling, from computer enabled bikes and improved performance tracking, data collection, right through to the utility of GPS. According to Holger Haubold, ECF’s Fiscal and Economic Policy Officer, “We are indeed facing a new era of open and massively available data”!

Different sessions of Velo-City 2018 will explore and answer questions, such as how to identify and use the available data? What is the role of civil and academic society on collecting this data? How to utilize this data on promoting public policies?

The sessions will also introduce tools such as Dublin’s Liberty Bell, a low cost, technical solution that simplifies the gathering and centralisation of qualitative data about the movement of bicyclists and pedestrians through a neighbourhood, campus, public amenity or access to different modes of transport.

Don’t miss the session ‘Data for What’ at Velo-city 2018, on Friday 15th June at 14.00-15.00.
