Sindikat Biciklista from Zagreb, Croatia, together with the Minister of Economy Tomislav Panenić and Minister of Environmental and Nature Protection Slaven Dobrović, announced the biggest Croatian national Bike2Work campaign on May 2nd, 2016. The motto of the Croatian campaign is "Life is too short for traffic jams”, and the goal is to show how the use of bicycle in getting to work can save both time and money.

Last year's campaign was already a great success, above all considered it was only run in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. With nearly 500 companies and organizations participating, and more than 4,000 people, double than the expected amount, the Bike2Work campaign also managed to save 165 tons of CO2 cycling a grand total of more than 500,000 km. The 2016 campaign is expected to be even more successful: the number of registered organizations is already twice as high as last year's.

Croatian Minister of Environmental and Nature Protection, Slaven Dobrović, said:

Fighting climate change is a global imperative. Only from the transport sector comes about 25% of CO2 emissions. Therefore, we conduct a number of projects to reduce emissions. Among them is bicycle commuting, especially in urban areas where the air pollution from traffic is elevated. The use of bicycles has many advantages - from health benefits, commuting faster, and avoiding traffic jams, to protecting the environment by contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. I believe that this campaign will contribute to raising awareness of the importance of environmental protection.

On his behalf, Tomislav Panenić, Minister of Economy, called "all decision makers and mayors to build high quality cycling infrastructure. We should increase the budget share for cycling infrastructure.1% of European GDP is lost in traffic jams: with the bicycle, that can be prevented. I believe that the companies participating in the campaign will see that their employees are happier and more productive, and ultimately more efficient if they use a bicycle to come to work.”

These interventions clearly show the positive attitude of the Croatian government towards cycling, and the efficacity of the Bike2Work campaign in removing the cultural obstacles to cycling.
