Breaking News: ECF’s Cities for Cyclists network now open to the world’s top cycling regions. After the Velo-city Conference 2017 the ECF Cities for Cyclists Network will become the Cities & Regions for Cyclists Network, reflecting the important role regions and provinces play in the development of cycling cities across the world. 

Some of the world’s most ambitious cycling cities and regions came together in Nijmegen, Netherlands on Monday for their annual Velo-city pre-event. While exploring and discussing the world class infrastructure and high cycling levels in Nijmegen they practically tested many of the facilities from cycling highways to underground cycle parking facilities.

That meant pushing as well as pedalling in some cases! 

Subjects being discussed on the network day reflected the diversity of the participants. Past Velo-city hosts included global hosts Taipei and Copenhagen, while the spread of cycling levels stretched from Skopje in Macedonia to Groningen from the Netherlands. The development of world class infrastructure was a highlight because of the examples demonstrated by Nijmegen on the group cycle tour, but the discussions spread across bike sharing, cycle parking, cycle streets, behaviour change and how to build national cycling city networks.

ECF welcomed new city members Valencia (Spain) and Poznan (Poland) who said they found the day both useful and inspirational.

The event concluded with a networking dinner where the discussions continued with great energy, infrastructure plans were being drawn on the back of menus well into the evening!
