Velo-city 2024, the annual world cycling summit, is gearing up to take place in the Belgian City of Ghent from 18-21 June 2024. With the call for abstracts officially opening today, experts from around the world are invited to contribute their insights, projects, data, stories and innovative ideas to shape the future of cycling and sustainable mobility.

Velo-city, the flagship event of the European Cyclists’ Federation, is the premier international platform for sparking dialogue, collaboration and knowledge sharing within the realm of cycling and sustainable transport. The 2024 edition wants to highlight voices from all over the world and aims at introducing content in innovative ways such as sharing lessons learned from failures or organising fiery debates where opposing arguments are put forward!

Main theme: Connecting Through Cycling

Connection is everything and the bike is all about connection! From linking places to bridging people, modes of transport, and sectors, the bicycle is a symbol of forging connections that matter. It's the ideal mode of transport: low-tech, low-cost, easy, and in constant connection with other cyclists and the environment. Under the overarching main theme, Velo-city 2024 Ghent will delve into the following subthemes:

Connecting people and communities – Cycling is a gift that keeps on giving to society. It's accessible, cheap, healthy and social, in other words it’s a democratising force. To increase the number of people cycling, we need to build an inclusive cycling culture that appeals to people of all backgrounds.

Connecting regions, cities and neighbourhoods - With the right conditions, bikes are an ideal mode of transport not only within cities, but also in between and to and from more suburban and rural areas around cities. Spatial layouts and possibilities are very different. How can we ensure continuous and easily readable infrastructure throughout?

Connecting cycling with other modes - For many, cycling isn't just a ride, but a vital link in a multi-modal transport chain. The combination of walking, public transport, (shared) cars and (shared) bikes for the first or last mile or for car-free living becomes increasingly popular.

Connecting industries and sectors - Cycling presents a solution to numerous challenges and serves as a fast track towards helping various stakeholders reach their sustainability goals. More cycling means reduced energy dependence, green jobs, climate crisis action and less strain health budgets.
