“Cyclist Friendly” award for cycling infrastructure development in Latvia

Closing the European Mobility Week 2016 on 22nd of September twelve enterprises and municipalities were awarded for the investment in the development of cycling infrastructure and for building cyclist friendly bicycle stands and twenty-eight organizations were awarded for the efforts of organizing cycling events and developing cycling tourism.

The “Cyclist friendly” award is aimed at Latvian municipalities, enterprises and NGOs to promote the best practices in the development of cycling infrastructure and organizing cycling events, as well as cycling tourism development within Latvia. This annual “Cyclist Friendly” award is organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia and Latvian Cyclists’ Union.

The University of Latvia has created the largest park of bicycle stands in Riga. The first multifunctional cycling park in Baltics for MTB, BMX, street and balance bikes was opened for public in Daugavpils – these are just a few of the recent cycling industry achievements in Latvia highlighted during the “Cyclist friendly” award ceremony.

During the opening speech of the ceremony the representative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Jānis Eglīts emphasized how important developing highly efficient cycling infrastructure and the public understanding about cycling as a sustainable means of transportation is for further development of the cycling culture within Latvia.
