On 16 May 2023, the United Nations General Assembly designated 26 November as World Sustainable Transport Day. The landmark decision comes as another significant step towards promoting sustainable transport cooperation and advancing the global commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the Political Declaration on improving global road safety.

Resolution A/RES/77/286, led by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by 66 other nations, invites all UN Member States, organisations within those states (including non-governmental organisations), individuals and other relevant stakeholders to mark World Sustainable Transport Day by launching education campaigns and events aimed at enhancing public knowledge on sustainable transport issues. In doing so, World Sustainable Transport Day aims to tackle pressing challenges and identify opportunities for sustainable mobility that align with the global goals of sustainability.

The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) welcomes the resolution for World Sustainable Transport Day and encourages all stakeholders to prioritise cycling as the most efficient, accessible and environmentally sustainable mode of transport within the mobility mix. The announcement comes just over a year since the UN General Assembly accepted a previous resolution that called for the integration of mainstream bicycling into public transportation systems for sustainable development.

ECF CEO Jill Warren stated, “We at ECF are excited to celebrate another World Day on which we can promote cycling as one of the most sustainable, healthy and inclusive modes of transport within the mobility mix. Along with World Bicycle Day, World Sustainable Transport Day offers another fantastic opportunity for people around the world to recognise and learn about the immense potential of cycling. We commend the UN for accepting this new resolution and encourage all of those who will celebrate it with us to include and prioritise cycling in their campaigns for sustainable transport.”

According to the resolution, World Sustainable Transport Day will serve as a catalyst for enhancing intermodal transport connectivity, promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions and developing socially inclusive transport infrastructure. The initiative focuses on various aspects of transport sustainability to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach towards a greener future.

At the heart of this initiative lies the recognition of sustainable, low-emission and energy-efficient modes of transport as vital contributors to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Moreover, these modes of transport play a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

A new opportunity for cycling

Cycling offers numerous benefits, including reducing carbon emissions, improving public health and fostering more liveable cities. It is also already one of the most popular and accessible modes of sustainable transport available worldwide. As a mode of transport, it undeniably covers several aspects of the UN’s SDGs, promoting healthy lifestyles while also addressing the challenges of congestion and air pollution. It provides an accessible and affordable means of transportation for all, irrespective of age, socioeconomic background or gender. Furthermore, cycling promotes social inclusivity, creating vibrant communities and fostering a sense of belonging.

By endorsing cycling as an integral part of sustainable transport on World Sustainable Transport Day, ECF urges national and subnational governments to prioritise the development of cycling infrastructure and facilities in their countries. Investments in cycling infrastructure will not only encourage more people to embrace cycling but also lead to safer, more sustainable and more enjoyable journeys for all road users.

For maximum effectiveness, the UN's recognition of World Sustainable Transport Day must also extend to international institutions, the private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). ECF calls upon these entities to join us in celebrating World Sustainable Transport Day by actively supporting and investing in cycling projects and initiatives that promote sustainable mobility worldwide. By working together, we can unlock the immense potential of cycling to transform both urban and rural communities and contribute to a more sustainable future.

As the first-ever World Sustainable Transport Day draws closer, it is an opportune moment for governments, organisations and individuals to reflect on their transportation choices and commit to sustainable alternatives. By embracing cycling and other sustainable modes of transport, we can create a greener, healthier, and more equitable world.
