Through Velo-city 2018 article series we will be taking a closer look into sessions coordinated by ECF partner organizations and institutions and learn more about their main theme and participating speakers. The article series on Partner Sessions continue with UCI’s session: The impact of sport and leisure on behavioural change for more cycling.

Founded on April 14, 1900, in Paris, France, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for cycling. Its mission consists of developing and overseeing cycling in all its form, for all people. From a competitive sport, as a healthy recreational activity, as means of transport, and also just for fun.

During the session, speakers from the worlds of sport and advocacy will reflect on how elite sport can inspire and drive more people to cycle more often for whatever reason, and how competitive, recreational and leisure cycling can act as a catalyst to promote a stronger cycling culture around the world.

The session will tackle some of the key topics facing the cycling and sports movement, including:

-        How can we strengthen the link between elite and everyday cycling to drive behaviour change in favour of more cycling?

-        Bridging the gap between leisure and urban cycling - how can recreational and leisure cycling promote a stronger cycling culture in society?

-        Public interventions - what policies can encourage sport, physical activity and active travel?

-        Uniting disparate communities - how collaborative advocacy initiatives between diverse cycling communities can serve all.

The UCI session will feature exceptional speakers such as:

  • Isabella Burczak, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) – Advocacy and Mass Events Manager, Switzerland.
  • Thiago Hedrick de Sa, WHO, Brazil.
  • Gideoni Monteiro, Professional Cyclist, Brazil.

The UCI session is scheduled for Day 2 of Velo-city 2018; Wednesday 13th June 2018 at 11:40-12:40.
