The European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation has recently published two documents related to cities and urban development:
  • The Publication "EU Research and Innovation for and with Cities".This report provides an overview of the main EU Research and Innovation (R&I) actions for and with cities, promoted both at the European and international level to foster sustainable urban development. In addition it presents a detailed overview of budget of Horizon 2020 and the past three research Framework Programmes (FP7, FP6 and FP5) committed to city-related projects.
  • An overview document of the Horizon 2020 Work programme of Research and Innovation funding for 2018-2020, of all calls related to cities and urban development. For cycling, especially part SC4 (Societal Challenges - Smart, green and integrated transport) is relevant.
  • And the European Regional Development Fund also issued the Urban Innovative Actions 3rd Call for Proposals, aimed at providing urban areas throughout Europe with resources to test new and unproven solutions to address urban challenges. The call is mainly targeted at urban authorities, but universities and academics are encouraged to participate as Delivery Partners to provide project leaders with the necessary technical solutions. While there isn't a specific chapter on Mobility, the one on Air Quality improvements specifically mentions the promotion of zero emission modes, such as cycling and walking.
