Day two of Velo-city 2018 will begin with a stimulating discussion about “Technology”. In this plenary, global leaders in the field will present and discuss some of the emerging challenges for governance, for cities and for advocates as new technologies go live.

New technologies could revolutionize mobility in the next few years. But what is the relevance to a 200 year old technology like cycling? Discussions will include:

The direction of Artificial Intelligence and automated vehicle technology and the broader opportunities of AV technology and active transportation.

Leading cities like Copenhagen are adopting leading Intelligent Transport Solutions for mobility, especially some of the unique innovations for cyclists’ traffic management. There are opportunities and challenges for any city in the new technologies being offered, what are the best ways cities can react to promote and protect active mobility?

Successes of cycling as a new technology have included services such as e-bikes, bike sharing and routing. There is further potential for cycling in technological fields such as Mobility as a Service and sharing systems through bike sharing, how can they be exploited?

Should there be health warnings to cycling advocates and policy makers not engaging with emerging policy challenges and leaving it all to the automotive, freight or public transport sectors?

The speakers for the “Technology” plenary are:

  • Tim Papandreou, a key strategic advisor and trusted thought leader to companies and governments on emerging transportation trends. He co-founded City Innovate, a smart city platform creating tactical win-win solutions. As Chief Innovation Officer for San Francisco’s transportation agency, he lead teams to deliver the US Smart City Challenge; Strategic Work Plan and its 50% sustainable mode share goal 3 years early; key redevelopment projects and Vision Zero traffic safety.
  • Ninna Hedeager, mayor of Technical and Environmental Affairs and Head of the Technical and Environmental Committee.
