Organization WHO IS Départements & Régions cyclables ? Outside cities the cycling facilities and the cycling system is in the hands of the local regional authorities: the Départements and the Regions. The "Départements Cyclables" Association was created in 1999 by 11 French départements. The network now gathers 68 French local authorities around one shared objective: developping a cycling system, cycling facilities and a cycling culture within French local authorities.

Example activities WHAT DOES Départements & Régions cyclables DO? 1. PUBLICATIONS - The Départements & Régions cyclables network has published 8 technical books on the various aspects of cycling development: cycling facilities, tourism, legal issues, cycling to school, etc. 2. EVENTS ORGANISATION - A yearly congress addresses one specific theme related to cycling development. 3. A TECHNICAL NETWORK - a few dozen of ingeneers from French regions or départements take an active part into the technical network. The key of this technical network being "spread the know-how, exchange and improve". 4. PROMOTION OF GREENWAYS and CYCLE ROUTES - the cycle routes and especially greenways are one of the major concerns of French authorities when it comes to developping cycling. As a consequence to that, the Départements & Régions cyclables has developped the national greenways and cycle routes observatory. This national tool is made BY the local authorities and FOR the local authorities. It is not meant to be shared with the public quite yet.
