Organization
The Polish Environmental Partnership Foundation (PEPF) began its operations on July 1st 1997 as an independent, not - for - profit and self - governing foundation based in Krakow. The PEPF is a successor to a program called the Environmental Partnership for Central Europe (EPCE) delivered by The German Marshall Fund of the US from 1992 till 1997 in Poland. The Foundation operates as member of the Environmental Partnership for Sustainable Development Association (EPSD), which supports grass-roots environmental action in Central and Eastern Europe. Sister Partnership foundations operate within the framework of the EPSD in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. PEPF operates several thematic programs which are: Greenways (as a part of the Central & Eastern European Greenways – CEG program), Partnership Groups, Schools for Sustainable Development, Clean Business, Small environmental grants (through Partnership fund) and others.
Short Summary

Greenways are main leading PEPF program focussed on development of ecotourism and sustainable mobility. The Polish Greenways programme has promoted the development of environmentally-friendly tourism and recreation , healthy and active life-styles and community-based economic development since 2001, seeking at the same time to conserve natural, cultural and landscape values. Greenways are natural and cultural heritage trails, created along rivers, historic trade routes or rail lines running along and natural corridors. They include bicycle, hiking, horse-riding, water trails and other transportation routes, which promote non-motorized travel and mobility. Polish Greenways extend over 3600 km. The Polish Greenways programme is part of an international initiative called the Central & Eastern European Greenways" (CEG), which is being implemented by the Environmental Partnership for Sustainable Development Association. CEG program is also a member of the Euroepan Greenways Association. The Polish Environmental Partnership Foundation supports the development of Polish Greenways through technical assistance, training and organizing financial support for community-based initiatives focused on sustainable development.

Example activities

Polish Greenways network includes international and national eco-tourism trails such as: Krakow-Moravia-Vienna Greenways (Poland, Czech Republic, Austria), Amber Trail Greenways Budapest-Krakow (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary) and proposed from Krakow to Gdansk, with a local loop called the Nowa Huta - Dlubnia Greenway in Nowa Huta in Krakow, Green Bicycle - East Carpathian Greenway (Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine - best Greenways in CEE with Lawrence S. Rockefeller Award in 2006), Oder River Trail (Poland), Necklace of the North Greenway (Poland) and Podlasie White Stork Trail (Poland). PEPF is launching the Cyclists Welcome certification scheme in order to improve services for bicyclists, based on the ADFC and the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation model. We are involved in organization of several mobility and cycling events each year such as: Earth Day, International Week of Cycling Tourism and the European Mobility Week. PEPF is also involved in development of greenways movement  in Belarus and Ukraine, including know how sharing and technical assistance.
