The 1st Catalan Congress of the Bicycle took place in Barcelona from 7th to 11th of june 2006. The European Cyclists´ Federation was presented by its member BACC, Bicicleta Club de Catalunya (member of ConBici) and by its chairman Haritz Ferrando. The banner session and the ECF bruchures atrracted the visitors of the event.

"The appearance of the law of mobility 9/2003, of June 15th, that determines the global vision of mobility as a system that grants priority to the systems of more sustainable transport, such as current public transportation or going by foot or bicycle; on one hand, the public and social advantages that come from the greater use of the bicycle, on the other, have caused in the several years diverse initiatives and public actions in favor of the bicycle.
The bicycle does not contaminate, it is quiet, occupies little space, provides freedom of movement and in small and medium distances (up to 5-8 kilometers), it is one of the fastest vehicles. It does not represent an additional energy cost and with one quarter of the calories that a pedestrian consumes, it can get to obtain a speed of between three and four times greater. It can be acquired for not a lot of money and its maintenance is simple and economical. It also allows physical exercise, which contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
We should remember that the bicycle is the most used means of transportation today, with more than 1,000 million people throughout the world that use it in their daily journeys.
The actions in favor of the bicycle as a tool of daily mobility and vehicle for pleasure, sport and tourism, besides directly benefiting users, must be understood as a key element for fairness and social communication, the increase of freedom and autonomy of people, the decrease of the environmental impact of mobility, the reinforcement of the health of citizens and the promotion of personal benefits and our surroundings. A society that uses the bicycle is a healthier one, which is more inhabitable and socially responsible with respect to future generations.
This framework establishes the opportunity to celebrate the 1st Catalan Congress of the Bicycle as a tool of communication of the knowledge and experiences that favor the use of the bicycle and the security of cyclists.
